Can you keep your company’s AI data in Switzerland?

Yes - but it is a choice you have to make deliberately, and it can cost more. The major cloud providers now offer AI processing inside Swiss data centres, and keeping Microsoft 365 Copilot data in Switzerland has been a paid, configured option since late 2025. The default settings of most AI tools still send data abroad.

The default is not Switzerland

When an employee pastes text into a public AI chatbot, that data typically leaves the country and is processed under the provider's terms. Nothing about that is automatic or obvious - which is why only 34% of Swiss SMEs have clear rules on what data staff may enter into AI tools (AXA/Sotomo 2026).

What the big providers offer

  • Microsoft has expanded its Swiss data-residency options. It announced in-country processing for Microsoft 365 Copilot interactions in Switzerland (November 2025), and Swiss Azure data centres have hosted Azure OpenAI workloads since 2023. Keeping data in-country generally depends on explicit settings and premium SKUs - Swiss IT press reports in-country Copilot processing priced at a premium over standard processing, and one configuration deadline of 14 December 2026 for Microsoft 365 data-location settings.

  • Swisscom runs a sovereign Swiss AI platform, used among other things to serve Apertus, the Swiss open language model.

  • Self-hosting is the strongest form: open models (Apertus, and open-weight models from other labs) can run on a company's own Swiss infrastructure so no prompt data leaves the building.

What it costs

Swiss press and IT-service reporting put Swiss/EU in-country AI processing at roughly up to 30% above standard processing, depending on service and volume. The honest answer: get a quote for your actual usage - the premium varies widely by product.

A pragmatic ladder for a Swiss SME

  1. Write the rule first: which categories of data may never go into a public AI tool (client data, HR, contracts, unpublished financials).

  2. Use business tiers of the tools you already pay for, with training-on-your-data switched off.

  3. For sensitive workloads, choose in-country processing (Swiss Azure region, Swisscom) or a self-hosted open model.

  4. Re-check settings twice a year - data-location defaults change, as the December 2026 Microsoft 365 setting change shows.
